Edinburgh hotel prices for business travel: the dates that move the rate

Edinburgh has roughly half a million people and a calendar that behaves like a city several times the size. A room that is straightforward to book in the first week of the month can be three times the price and sold out in the third. If you arrange work trips here, the calendar is most of the job.

Hands-on Edinburgh service opens 12 October 2026. The self-serve platform follows. See the launch plan.

When are Edinburgh hotels most expensive, and when should a business travel instead?

August is the extreme, when the Fringe and the International Festival run through most of the month and the whole city sells out. The other reliable peaks are Hogmanay and the days either side of New Year, home match weekends at Murrayfield during the Six Nations in late winter, university graduation weeks in summer and late autumn, and any week with a large conference at the EICC. Outside those, Edinburgh is a normal midweek business city, and Monday to Thursday in the quiet months is when an independent hotel has the room to price a block properly.

The booking pattern we hear about

How NovaBid fixes it

01

Check the week before you commit to the dates

If the trip can move, moving it one week is worth more than any negotiation. Before you fix dates, check whether the week collides with August, the New Year period, a Murrayfield home match, a graduation week or a major conference at the EICC. If it does and the trip can shift, shift it.

02

For a peak week, go early and go direct

For August in particular, plan on booking months out and expect minimum stay requirements. This is the one time of year where locking something in early beats holding out for a better rate, and where a hotel just outside the centre with a ten minute bus ride is a sensible trade rather than a compromise.

03

For a quiet week, let hotels price the block

A quiet midweek is exactly when an independent will price a block properly, because filling four rooms on a Tuesday matters to them and does not to an algorithm. Post the brief once on NovaBid and independent Edinburgh hotels reply with private offers for those dates. Free for the business, and an account is created only when you send.

Frequently asked

Why are Edinburgh hotels so expensive in August?

The Fringe and the Edinburgh International Festival run through most of August and bring a very large number of visitors into a city with a limited number of rooms, alongside performers and crews who book long stays months in advance. Demand exceeds supply for weeks rather than days, so rates rise across the whole city, including hotels a long way from any venue.

Which weeks are cheapest for a business trip to Edinburgh?

Broadly, midweek in late January and February outside Six Nations home weekends, midweek in early December before the Christmas market period peaks, and midweek in the quieter stretches of spring and autumn. Monday to Thursday is consistently better value than a stay that includes a Friday or Saturday, because weekends compete with leisure visitors.

Does the Edinburgh visitor levy change what I pay?

It is a percentage charge on the accommodation part of a stay, introduced by the City of Edinburgh Council. What matters practically is whether the price you are quoted already includes it, because hotels present it differently and the difference shows up on the invoice. Ask before you approve anything. On NovaBid the hotel states whether its offer includes the levy and the business sees that line before it pays.

Is it cheaper to book a hotel outside the city centre?

Usually yes, and in August substantially so. The trade is travel time and the loss of being able to walk back after a client dinner. For a team of several people, one taxi each way each day can eat the difference, so work out the full cost rather than comparing room rates alone.

How far ahead should a business book Edinburgh hotels?

For August, months. For Hogmanay, months. For a Murrayfield home weekend or a known conference week, several weeks. For ordinary midweek dates, a week or two is usually enough, and for a small block that is often the point at which a hotel can still price it properly rather than selling you the last rooms.

Does NovaBid work for peak weeks?

It works, but honestly it is worth less to you then. In a week where a hotel can sell every room at a high rate to someone else, there is no reason for it to sharpen a price for a block. NovaBid earns its place in the ordinary and quiet weeks, which is most of the year.
