NovaBid vs Booking.com for business travel
These are not rival versions of the same thing. On a booking site you look through prices hotels have already published and pick one. On NovaBid you describe the trip and independent Edinburgh hotels write a price against that description. That single difference is what decides which one suits a given trip, and this page is honest about the trips where the booking site wins.
Hands-on Edinburgh service opens 12 October 2026. The self-serve platform follows. See the launch plan.
What is the difference between NovaBid and Booking.com, and when should a business use each?
The difference is which way the price is made. On Booking.com a hotel publishes rates and you select one. On NovaBid a business writes its trip once, including the things a search filter has no box for, and independent Edinburgh hotels each reply with one private offer priced for that brief. Use NovaBid for an Edinburgh trip with more than one room or a real requirement, where one payment and one receipt is easier than several. Use Booking.com when the trip is outside Edinburgh, when a specific hotel or brand is required, or when you need a room confirmed now rather than offers back within a stated window. NovaBid is free for the business and works only with independent hotels. It is Edinburgh only, and trip requests are open now while hotel offers begin when the founding cohort opens, so anyone comparing the two today should know that.
The booking pattern we hear about
A search filter has boxes for stars, price and breakfast. It has no box for "three colleagues, two nights, a room to meet in on the Wednesday, arriving on the 6.40 so one of them needs an early check-in".
You are selecting from what has already been published rather than telling anyone what you need. However many rate types sit behind the listing, none of them was written for your trip, because nobody knew what your trip was.
A trip that is six rooms rather than one becomes six of everything to organise and reconcile, unless something puts it back together into a single booking and a single payment.
On the other side, offers take time. If somebody needs a room confirmed in the next ten minutes, waiting for hotels to reply is the wrong trade and we will say so.
How NovaBid fixes it
01
What Booking.com is, said plainly
Hotels publish rates and availability to the platform and you search, filter and book one of them, usually with immediate confirmation. It reaches far more hotels than we do, in almost every country, and it is very good at what it is for. It is not one flat price for everyone either: Booking.com documents rates that differ by device, by country and by membership tier, and closed user groups, and it runs a business product that handles group bookings. None of that changes the direction of travel, which is that the prices exist first and you choose among them.
02
What NovaBid is, said plainly
A business writes its trip once, in ordinary sentences, including the requirements a filter cannot express. Independent Edinburgh hotels see that brief and each sends one private offer against it: the room, the rate for those nights, what is included and the cancellation terms. Nothing is published, and no hotel can see what another has offered. The business compares the offers side by side, picks one, pays once for the whole trip and gets one receipt. The hotel pays NovaBid a commission only on a paid booking, 10% for founding partners and 12% standard, and nothing is added to the price the business sees.
03
How to tell which one a trip belongs to
The question is not which platform is better, it is whether your trip has anything in it worth describing. A single room in a city you visit often, on dates that are not unusual, has nothing to tender: search and book it. A trip with several people, a requirement that decides whether it works, or a finance team that would rather see one number before the trip than six expense claims after it, is worth writing down once and having priced.
Pricing
Free for SMBs. Hotels pay commission only on a paid booking: 10% founding, 12% standard.
No markup on the rate. No subscription. No per-booker fee. The hotel covers everything as the cost of winning your business.
Frequently asked
Is NovaBid cheaper than Booking.com?
We do not claim that, and you should be wary of anyone who claims it without having measured it. What we can describe is the mechanism: a hotel replying to one company about one set of dates is pricing that specific piece of business, which is a different act from publishing a rate for whoever comes along. Whether it produces a lower number depends on the hotel, the week and the brief. The only honest test is to post the trip and compare the offers with the published rates for the same dates yourself.
Why would a hotel offer a business something it has not published?
Because the two are different decisions. A published rate has to work for every booking that might arrive. An offer for a named company, for four rooms, on specific nights, is a decision the hotel can make with the whole picture in front of it, including how full it expects to be that week and whether it wants that particular business. It can also include the things that decide whether a trip works, which a rate card has no way to carry.
When is Booking.com the better answer?
Three cases, and they are common ones. If the trip is outside Edinburgh, because that is the only city we operate in. If a particular hotel or brand is required, because your traveller has status with it or your policy names it. And if you need a confirmed room now, because we ask you to wait for offers within a stated window and a booking site does not ask you to wait at all. In any of those, use the booking site and do not think twice about it.
Does NovaBid have as many hotels as Booking.com?
No, and it is not trying to. Booking.com reaches an enormous number of properties worldwide. NovaBid works with independent Edinburgh hotels and independently owned groups, never chains, and the founding cohort is being signed now. Breadth is what a booking site is for, and we would be a poor imitation of one.
How long does it take to get offers?
Hotels have a window to reply that depends on how soon the trip is: four hours for a same-day request, twenty four hours for the next two days, forty eight hours for three to seven days out, and seventy two hours for longer-term planning. That is the window hotels are given, not a promise about how many will answer. A booking site usually confirms straight away, which is a genuine advantage whenever time is the constraint.
What does each one cost the business?
Both are free for the business to use, and on both the hotel pays a commission on the booking. NovaBid's is 10% for founding partners and 12% standard, charged only when a booking is paid, with nothing added to the offer price. We do not quote other platforms' commission rates, because they vary by market and by property and we would be guessing at somebody else's numbers.
What about cancellation?
On a booking site the terms are set per rate by each hotel and run from free cancellation to fully non-refundable, so they are worth reading every time. NovaBid has one floor under every booking: cancel more than 48 hours before check-in for a full refund, and inside 48 hours there is no refund and the hotel is paid for having held the rooms. A hotel may add terms on its own offer, and you see them before you accept. We do not sell non-refundable rates.
What do I get for my records?
One payment for the whole trip and one confirmation email with the receipt in it, carrying the receipt number, the hotel, the dates and the total paid. That is a receipt, not a tax invoice, and we would rather be precise about the difference than let you assume something your finance team then has to unpick.
Can I use both?
Yes, and there is no reason to pick a side. They suit different trips, and plenty of companies will have both kinds in the same month. Use whichever fits the trip in front of you.
